Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) is a perennial species indigenous to Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa, which has a long history of being used in medicine, cooking and as an ornamental plant. Its traditional name, Althaea, is derived from the Greek ἄλθειν (to cure), from its healing properties. Marshmallow is known for its remarkable ability to relieve irritation of mucous membranes, most notably used to fight throat ulcers and gastric ulcers. However, it contains even more benefits for the stomach, including relief of:

●    Stomach ulcers
●    Diarrhea
●    Constipation
●    Swelling of stomach lining

Don’t get it confused with today’s sweet marshmallow treats. While they were originally made from the marshmallow root, today’s confections no longer contain Althaea officinalis.
